Choosing a software developer in Brisbane

Choose a software developer who is based in Australia, quotes a fixed price, gives you ownership of the code and shows you working software early. For a Brisbane business, location matters less than people think: most good developers work remotely, so the better test is whether they are accountable, easy to reach in your time zone and honest about trade-offs.

TechFluent is a small, senior Australian team based in Brisbane, working with clients across Australia (about us). This guide is the checklist we would use if we were hiring a developer ourselves.

What to look for

Onshore delivery. Every person on your project should be in Australia. That means the same time zone, the same working week and the same legal system. Ask who will actually write the code, not just who you meet in the sales call.

Senior people. The people who scope your project should be the people who build it. A common pattern is a senior pitch followed by a handoff to juniors or an offshore team.

Fixed price. A written price for an agreed scope, with changes agreed before they are done. Open-ended hourly billing makes the total impossible to plan.

You own the code. The code and IP should be yours on payment, in your repository, with documentation. If another team cannot pick it up, you are locked in.

A scoping step. A good developer does not quote from a one-page brief. They scope first. See how our Discovery works.

Honesty about what not to build. A developer who agrees with everything is not protecting your budget. Look for one who will tell you a feature is not worth the money or that a product already does the job.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. Who will write the code, and where are they based?
  2. Is the price fixed, and what happens when the scope changes?
  3. Who owns the code and IP, and when does ownership transfer?
  4. Will you sign an NDA before I share anything sensitive?
  5. Where will the software be hosted, and who controls the accounts?
  6. How often will I see working software?
  7. What does it cost to run after launch?
  8. Can I talk to a past client?

Does the developer need to be in Brisbane?

Not usually. Most of the work does not need a person in the room, and Brisbane developers work with clients across Australia just as clients in other cities work with us. In-person meetings are worth having. We prefer to meet face to face, because it builds the relationship and the trust. If you are busy, we are flexible: we can meet online, or on your terms.

Red flags

  • A quote with no scope behind it. There is nothing to compare.
  • Offshore delivery that is not disclosed. Ask directly.
  • No mention of IP ownership. Raise it early.
  • Nothing to show for weeks. You should see working software early.
  • Pressure to sign quickly. A good project survives a week of thought.

What it costs

Custom software typically costs $5k to $100k+ depending on size, complexity and deliverables, as described on our custom software development page. See our cost guide for what each band includes.

What a good first month looks like

You should not wait months to find out whether a developer is working well. In the first month, expect a clear scope in writing, a prototype or early working software to react to, a named person who answers your questions, and a plan for what happens next. If you have only heard about the process and not seen anything, ask why.

How to check references

Ask for two past clients and talk to them. Ask what was delivered, whether the price and timeline held, how the developer handled a problem, and whether they would hire them again. A developer who is proud of their work will not mind the request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a developer in my own city?

No. What matters is that they are Australian-based, accountable and responsive in your time zone.

How do I compare quotes?

Compare scope first, then price. A lower quote with a smaller scope is not cheaper.

Where do I start?

With a short conversation about what the business needs to achieve. You can book a discovery call.
